Facing significant change and disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic, districts across the state of Ohio were reckoning with learning loss in all grade levels. They needed a scalable, flexible solution that could integrate with classroom instruction and maintain high student engagement.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce identified high-dosage tutoring as a key strategy for accelerating student learning. Cignition's flexible tutoring formats, alignment with Ohio's learning standards, and proven, data-driven, tailored interventions made them an ideal partner for this mission. Cignition delivered virtual tutoring to a large population of students with diverse backgrounds and needs.

OTMS achieved strong academic recovery and lasting student engagement through Cignition.

The Challenge

Following pandemic disruptions, OTMS needed to close widening math gaps among middle school students while keeping engagement high. The district was looking for an intervention that could integrate into the school schedule, giving students consistent, structured support without interrupting their regular academic routine.

Cignition launched high-dosage virtual tutoring in 2022, starting with 49 students before expanding to 154 students in 2023. Sessions were embedded into the school day to ensure consistency. Student attendance significantly increased in the second year of intervention, due to an earlier program launch and stronger teacher collaboration. As attendance and consistency of intervention improved, academic growth skyrocketed.

Cignition helped DPS expand tutoring to 19 schools and boost math mastery and engagement through data-informed instruction.

The Challenge

Following COVID-related disruptions, DPS needed a way to accelerate math recovery across multiple schools, schedules, and student profiles. Known for its individual school autonomy, DPS required a variety of implementation models across the district and the ability for teachers to select specific content areas for upcoming tutoring sessions.

Cignition delivered high-dosage online math tutoring aligned to DPS curriculum to small groups of 3–4, each grouped by proficiency level. Real-time data collection and reporting let teachers select standards and adjust instructional focus instantly, supported by weekly collaboration with school teams and the DPS Expanded Academic Learning department. The program scaled rapidly—from three schools and 201 students to 19 schools and 1,044 students in a single year.

After pandemic disruptions, Ohio districts saw significant regression in foundational literacy—especially in K–5 learners. To reverse learning loss and prevent widening achievement gaps, the state needed a scalable tutoring model that delivered targeted instruction, aligned with standards, and could be implemented consistently across diverse districts and classrooms.

Cignition partnered with Future Forward Ohio to deliver structured, high-dosage tutoring with 4:1 grouping based on diagnostic data. Sessions followed a progressive structure, beginning with phonemic awareness and decoding before advancing to fluency and comprehension. Using tools like Phonics Hero and decodable readers, tutors delivered personalized literacy instruction aligned to state standards, reinforced through real-time mastery checks and consistent scheduling.
